How Are Expandable Container Houses Shipped?| Process, Cost & Delivery

Table of Contents

Many first-time buyers wonder how an expandable container house can be transported internationally. Although it looks like a complete home, its foldable design allows it to be shipped efficiently using standard shipping containers. In this guide, we will explain the entire shipping process, including packaging, container loading, transportation costs, and delivery.

How Are Expandable Container Houses Packed for Shipping?

Before international transportation, expandable container houses go through several preparation steps to ensure safe and efficient shipping.

  1. Fold up the house unit
  2. Store the furniture and appliances
  3. Exterior protective wrapping

First, the expandable house unit is folded at the factory into a compact transportation size. Inside the folded structure, there is still available space besides the non-foldable bathroom area. We will store furniture and appliances in this spare space. All items would be in proper package. After this, the whole box would be wrapped with stretch film.

  1. Install wheels at the bottom and side
  2. Use crane and forklift to load the house into the container

Bottom and side wheels are installed to make the folded house unit easier to move during loading. When the unit reaches the entrance of the shipping container, the wheels help the house slide smoothly into the container, making the loading process more efficient.

A crane and forklift are used to lift and position the expandable container house into the shipping container. The unit is carefully placed to ensure safe transportation.

Finally, the house unit is securely fastened with bolts inside the container to minimize movement during ocean transportation and ensure stability throughout the journey.

What Shipping Containers Are Used?

Before international shipping, expandable container houses are folded to reduce their transportation volume. The folded dimensions are designed according to international ocean shipping container standards, allowing the units to be transported using standard containers.

Although the folded structure still includes steel frames, wall panels, and other components that occupy a certain height, the overall dimensions remain within standard container transportation limits.

Taking Jeezoo expandable container houses as an example, our 10ft, 20ft, 30ft, and 40ft models share the same folded width and height of approximately 2,200mm (W) × 2,480mm (H). The main difference between models is the folded length, which corresponds approximately to 10ft, 20ft, 30ft, and 40ft.

A standard 40HQ (40-foot High Cube) container has external dimensions of:

12,192mm(length) × 2,438mm(width) × 2,896mm(height

With its larger internal volume and increased height compared with standard containers, a 40HQ container can accommodate most of our expandable container house models, helping simplify international transportation and reduce shipping costs.

Therefore, Jeezoo mainly uses 40HQ containers for shipping expandable container houses.

The table below shows how different models achieve efficient container shipping.

What Is the Shipping Process?

Step 1 Factory preparation

The factory usually spends 30 to 45 days completing the production of the house. Before packing and loading, each unit undergoes strict quality inspections to ensure that the structure, electrical system, and waterproofing performance meet the required standards.

Step 2 Folding & packaging

The expandable house is folded into a compact transportation size and equipped with additional wheels to facilitate handling and loading.

Step 3 Container loading

Forklifts and cranes are used to load the house unit into the shipping container. After loading, the container is transported to the departure port for shipment.

Step 4 Ocean transportation

The units are shipped by sea freight from the departure port to the destination country.

Step 5 Customs clearance

Upon arrival at the destination port, customs clearance procedures and applicable import duties or tariffs are required before delivery.

Step 6 Final delivery

After customs clearance, the houses are transported from the port to the final project site for installation.

How Much Does It Cost to Ship an Expandable Container House?

To estimate the shipping cost of an expandable container house, it is important to understand what factors are included in the total transportation expenses.

Generally, the shipping cost consists of two main parts:

  • Ocean freight
  • Inland delivery

Ocean Freight

For ocean freight, we will use Jeezoo’s projects as an example. Jeezoo is located in Guangdong, China, and Nansha Port is one of the nearest departure ports commonly used for international shipments.

Based on our previous projects, the estimated ocean freight to different regions is shown below:

DestinationEstimated Shipping Cost
USA, Europe, Africa, Central East4000-5000 USD
India3000-3500 USD
Southeast Asia1000-2000 USD

Note: Ocean freight rates fluctuate depending on various factors, including weather conditions, peak seasons, fuel prices, shipping policies, and market conditions. The final shipping cost is subject to the actual quotation at the time of shipment.

Inland Delivery

After the container arrives at the destination port, additional inland transportation is required to deliver the expandable container house to the final project site.

The inland delivery cost mainly depends on:

  • Distance from the port to the installation location
  • Local transportation conditions
  • Road accessibility
  • Required transportation equipment

Remote locations or difficult-access sites may require additional transportation arrangements and costs.

How Long Does Shipping and Installation Take?

The total delivery timeline depends on the destination, shipping route, and site preparation.

Ocean freight usually takes around 2 weeks for Asian regions and approximately 30–60 days for America and Europe, depending on the shipping route and current freight conditions.

After arrival, the installation time depends on factors such as available labor, installation experience, and site conditions. The expansion process itself usually takes around 0.5 to 2 hours, while additional work including fixing, waterproofing, utility connections, and interior finishing may require another 3–4 days.

How Are Expandable Houses Unloaded After Arrival?

After the expandable container house arrives at the project site, the next step is unloading the unit from the delivery truck.

Due to the weight and size of the house, unloading usually requires lifting equipment such as a crane or forklift. The unit is carefully placed onto the prepared foundation before expansion and installation.
